I didn’t expect to have to dissect this nasty shit on a Monday night. It’s a dark day for the game of baseball, let’s just put it that way. Don’t let your children or loved ones see this disgusting act of aggression.
“Attack” is putting it lightly. This was felony physical assault. What a disappointing clip and ugly all around. I’m not sure what was said but this is abhorrent behavior. Fines and suspensions are sure to be coming to prevent another fracas like this one. Firstly: The punch thrown here is unsafe. He attacks right in the vital organ region, he could’ve punctured a lung! Clear intent to harm. Second, and more importantly: He’s supposed to be setting an example for aspiring umpires everywhere. The damage to future generations of umpires in-training is irreparable. How am I supposed to explain this to my kids?
If we’re being honest, the player acted like he’d been stabbed in the heart. It’s unclear as to whether or not he deserved it, I hope we get some additional details. One thing’s for sure: Running your mouth knowing there’s no consequences tends to make small men feel big. That is, until they get a little unexpected jab in the rib cage. I wish there were microphones that could pick up what was said – I need to know what exactly set this guy off. How mad do you have to be to lose your cool like that?
The dynamic has changed. Maybe the next player to spout off some (I’m assuming) inflammatory shit will think twice lest they get smacked in the mouth. The tables have turned.
